Chapter Seventeen

Bruce

“Jules is doing fine,” I answer Harry’s question as we take a stroll through the garden behind his house. “She is loving being the new editor-in-chief.”

True, she got sidetracked because of what happened to her apartment and she was down in the dumps for a few days. Now, though, she seems to have made a complete recovery. In fact, I dare even say she’s happier than before, humming and smiling and more eager to strip me of my clothes, which of course, I’m happy to let her do.

“I’m sure she is,” Harry says. “And I’m glad you gave her the job. I would have done the same.”

“She’s clearly the most deserving.”

“But I suppose she’s busier than ever now. No wonder she hasn’t come to see me.”

I say nothing. Yes, Jules has been busy, but the reason she hasn’t come to see Harry is because we’ve agreed that she shouldn’t leave the apartment any more than necessary until the person who sent her that mirror message has been caught. She’s able to do most of her work online, and since Ross has already cleared the editorial department she’s been able to attend important meetings at Bavil, but unfortunately that also means that we’re fresh out of leads.

Harry sighs. “I miss her. I miss her smile and her ideas.”

“Well, she’ll be here for your party,” I assure him. “How’s it going?”

“Oh, Megan is taking care of everything. And Tricia is helping, too.”

Tricia? Who’s Tricia?

Just then, a woman with eyeglasses and red hair in a braid emerges from around the corner.

“There you are.” She clasps her hands together and smiles. “We have to start practicing for our dance.”

My eyebrows arch. Dance?

“Bruce, this is Tricia,” Harry introduces. “She’s my nurse.”

“Oh.”

I take another look at her. Don’t nurses wear white? Why is this woman wearing a yellow dress?

“Nice to meet you, Bruce.” She offers me her hand. “I’ve heard so much about you.”

I simply grin as I shake her hand.

“That dress is stunning,” Harry says.

“You think?” Tricia gives a whirl. “Wait until you see me dance in it.”

Harry chuckles. “Tricia happens to do ballroom dance, too, and she’s teaching me so we can both dance at my party.”

Tricia touches his arm. “Your father is a very good dancer.”

Harry waves a hand. “Oh, shush.”

Okay. She’s Harry’s nurse and his ballroom dance instructor. What else?

“You should see Tricia dance,” Harry says. “She’s quite the dancer.”

Tricia beams. Her eyes light up as they glance at Harry.

I fold my arms over my chest. “What are you dancing?”

“It’s a medley,” Tricia answers.

“One of the songs we’re dancing to is ‘It’s Not Unusual’ by Tom Jones,” Harry says. “Your mother loved it.”

I fall silent. Did he just bring up my mother?

“Your father showed me pictures of her,” Tricia says. “She seemed wonderful.”

“She was,” I agree. “Even more wonderful in person than in pictures, which Harry would have known if he had stayed with her.”

Harry throws me a hard glance. I throw one back.

He was the one who brought her up, not me.
